Much like the chicken and the egg, which came first? The bird… or the tree that offers its trunk and branches as safe haven!
In this way, the woodlands of these slopes offer a perch for the little feet of the melodious linnet or the European turtle dove. These species, common in the Hauts-de-France region, are in decline as a result of the destruction of their habitats and the use of pesticides.

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
In this parcel of land, we refer to ancient woodland. Therefore, the trees fulfil their cycle over several centuries: growth, maturity, ageing then death and regeneration.
Trees, hollow or fallen, living or dead, are vital for some birds. They feed on the insects living in the decomposing wood or hidden in their cavities like tits, nuthatches, flycatchers...
Bed and board: woodland and undergrowth to hide away in, grass expanses to feed on.
Piles of branches at the foot of high forests offer sought-after shelter for warblers or the robin redbreast. These are also favoured nesting sites for the Eurasian wren which doesn’t like groves that are too sparse.
